Marsilius Lecture Winter Semester 2025/26 Times are changing, and we change with them: Spatial Transformation and Social Cohesion

Prof. Dr. Martina Löw, Sociology of Planning and Architecture, Technische Universität Berlin

Monday, 02 February 2026, 4:00 p.m., Aula of the Old University

Spatial orientation is changing with navigation systems. Diaries today are mostly virtual pins in social media. Our home has become a home office. We have more fortified national borders worldwide than ever before, and yet space seems to be global. Figuratively speaking, we no longer know in which spaces we actually live. Spatial transformation has consequences for social cohesion and alters forms of subjectivation in modern societies.

In her lecture, Martina Löw will conceptualize social change in spatial terms, illustrate spatial transformations, and explore the consequences this refiguration has for societies worldwide.
