Dying in modern societies at the start of 21st century

Aging and dying in modern societies belongs to the most neglected and supressed phenomena of life. This is surprising because the majority of us becomes older and definitely everyone dies. As such aging and dying is an integral part of life in our societies. Nevethelss, youngness rules in all media and in advertising, whereas dying takes place in hidden places and is rarely witnessed in public. We know many things about apoptosis, but we do not have handbooks on the (patho-)physiology of human dying. And if one looks for a good comprehensive work on the psychical, spiritual, or the social situation of the dying in modern societies one is often enough disappointed after a while.

The goal of the project is to start and establish a larger interdisciplinary discourse on dying in contemporary Western society, leading into a major study or handbook of ‘modern’ dying.
